Overview
of the Research on the Use of Computers and Technology with
Young Children
Two major themes
run through the literature. The first is that technology use
offers children socialization and language opportunities. In
order for children to receive these benefits, the setting must
be designed to allow children to interact at the computer. This
includes everything from having enough room for at least two
children at the computer, to making sure that all kids have
equitable access.
The second major
theme involves the software that children use. Because young
children learn through manipulation of their environment, exploration
and discovery are their primary teachers. Software offers children
the greatest benefits when it is suited to the child's developmental
needs; encourages exploration, imagination, and problem solving;
contains sound, music and voice; provides quick feedback to
children; and is open-ended, with the child in control of the
direction and pace.
Software and the
learning environment (physical setting, manner of teaching ,
etc.) need to facilitate active use of technology in the classroom,
within the context of the curriculum. Children will be making
decisions, interacting with the software, and often creating
new problems they then have to solve. Teachers become questioners,
guides and risk-takers willing to explore, experiment, and incorporate
technology into their learning.
