Jane Krauss (JK): I can see how much practice
kids need in just delivery, where they get up and they have
good eye contact and they're not working from their
notes anymore because they're so practiced and...and,
um, using a strong, controlled voice and...and...and just
being more in control of themselves when they're up
there and getting the speech to do what they want it to do.
Some of those kids who are totally locked onto the card and
they can't leave the card for anything, um, they did
a better job just with me forcing them to memorize it. And
they'd write as much as they could on a little tiny
card and then read every little word and then be frustrated
because they'd lose their place. And it was like, you
know, this card isn't really used for this purpose.
And I'd rather that they didn't memorize it just
word for word. Really, I like that idea of...of having such
a strong sense of your organization and your information that
you can go from point to point in a more, ...more conversational
way.
