Peter and students reflect
on group process:
(transcription)
Peter Knowles (PK): I think one thing that
most of them got was a better sense of how to deal with people
you have to work with. And they had successes with it and
they had failures with it, and, um, sometimes it was something
that was real simple to fix and sometimes it was we-agree-to-disagree-type
solution. But I think that awareness, um, helps out a lot,
especially right off the bat, because they'll be in those
classes with those kids for three more years and a lot of
the classes will ask them to pair up or triple up or get in
groups of four, or whatever, and work with each other on short-term
basis and long-term basis with kids that they don't necessarily
want to work with.
Kareesa, 9th Grade Student (K): So the group thing
was really good and it's helpful. You got... We didn't have
the same group the whole thing. We switched so we got to know
different people, even if we like knew their names we just
really got to know them and work with them. And we didn't
just know them as students or, you know, someone just walking
around. We knew them as friends or work partner. We didn't
treat them any differently cause we didn't know 'em very good
or we heard something about 'em.
(PK): I think there was...there was a sense by the
end of the course that that was a lot of...a little bit easier
to do because it wasn't going to kill 'em if they worked with
somebody they didn't like. They had enough exposure and enough
understanding about sort of the group process that it's not
going to throw them in the future. Some of them are pretty
good at it already and some of them are very good at actually
making sure that the group process is taking place.
