Video Study Guide
Students use this study guide with a video titled, Visions of Adventure: Understanding World Geography Using Maps and Globes.


The video you are about to watch will answer the questions. However, you may already know the answers to many of them. Before starting the video, read through the questions, discuss them with your group, and write the answers to any that you already know. Use a pencil in case you were mistaken, and feel free to add to your original answer when you find additional information.

Questions -- Part I:

a) What's the difference between a map and a globe?


b) Why was the Mediterranean Sea so important to early Western mapmakers?


c) Why is it so difficult to transfer items on the globe to a map?


d) Which is larger in area: Greenland or South America?


e) What are the 6 most common projections used for changing a globe into a map?


f) Why are there so many?


STOP the video at the end of the first part, and discuss your answers with your group. Make sure everyone has complete, accurate answers. Discuss any points of disagreement. When you're all satisfied, flip the page and go on.

Part II:

Again, before starting the video, read through the questions, discuss them with your group, and write the answers to any that you already know.

a) What is an astrolabe and how is it used?


b) What are lines of latitude and lines of longitude?


c) Place a check mark in the proper box to answer each question

When you come to the end of Part II, stop the video and rewind it. Discuss your answers with those of your team members. Make sure everyone has complete answers and that you all agree on them.
