Teacher Reflections
Peter Considers

This
open-ended project presented issues that are important for students to address.
At the end of the course, Peter discussed one of his hopes for student growth and understanding during this first Global Challenge project of the year.

Impact of development

What opportunities did students have to address the cultural, social and environmental impact of development--particularly with this multinational?

Peter's description of MOI as an outside multinational was conscious and intentional. He had hoped to address the complexity of development in the context of the Global Challenge project scenario and with the class as a whole. He had envisioned several opportunities to discuss the impact of a big production facility bringing things to those who need an improved standard of living.

Teachable
Moments

"The closest we got to discussing it during the first Global Challenge was when one of the students asked if a county 'had to' let MOI build its plant there. That was a teachable moment which I still recall because I let it slip by. We were still trying to define some of the tasks, and I asked the student to hang onto the question and bring it up later. I don’t think he ever did, and I didn’t either. Few students stopped to think about it, but it was originally a thread I intended to yank pretty heavily. . .We just didn’t end up developing that aspect as strongly as I’d hoped."

Peter was able to address a related issue of outsourcing production in Global Challenge II when the students looked at NAFTA and other international trade issues.
