State Report and Research & Study Habits
Jane assesses the students on both their final report and research and study habits with this scoring guide. Each score is followed by a description of what she expects that score to reflect.


FINAL REPORT SCORING GUIDE

Score of 4: Organization: All sections of the report are present and in order. Each topic in the report begins on a new page. Subtopics are noted with headings. Content: The outline for the report was followed, and accurate information on each topic is present. Bibliography is in proper form and at least 5 references are cited. Writing: Paragraphs are written with topic sentences and supporting details. All sentences are complete. The language is clearly that of the writer and not copied from another source. Appearance: There are fewer than 10 punctuation or spelling errors in the report. Handwriting is legible and corrections are neatly made. If typed, a consistent, simple format is used. The title page is attractive.

Score of 3: Organization: All sections of the report are present and in order. Each topic in the report begins on a new page. Most subtopics are noted with headings. Content: The outline for the report was followed, and accurate information on most subjects is present. Bibliography has proper form, though reference types may not be distinguishable. At least 5 references are cited. Writing: Paragraph form is used, and paragraphs are written with some topic sentences and supporting detail. Several sentences may be fragmented. It is clear the language is that of the writer and not copied from another source. Appearance: There are fewer than 20 punctuation or spelling errors in the report. Handwriting is legible and corrections are neatly made. If typed, a consistent, simple format is used. The title page is nicely done.

Score of 2: Organization: Sections of the report may not be present or are out of order. In the report, not all topics begins on a new page, or some subtopics are not dearly noted with headings. Content: The outline for the report is generally followed, but information is lacking on some topics. Fewer than 5 references are cited in the bibliography. Citations may be incomplete, but referenced work could be located. Writing: Paragraph form is used, but topic sentences or supporting detail may be limited. Some sentences may be fragmented. Some language may have been copied from source material. Appearance: There are fewer than 20 punctuation or spelling errors. At times handwriting may be illegible or corrections make it hard to read. If typed, formatting may interfere with dear organization of the report.

Score of 1: Organization: Parts of the report are not present or are out of order. In the report, not all topics begin on a new page, or some subtopics are not noted with headings. Content: The outline for the report is not followed, or information is lacking for many subjects. Fewer than 5 references are cited in bibliography. Information is incomplete and referenced work could not be found based on the citation. Writing: Paragraph form is not used, and topic sentences and supporting detail are lacking. Sentences may be fragmented. At times language may have been copied from another source. Appearance: There are more than 20 punctuation or spelling errors. Handwriting may be illegible or corrections make it hard to read. If typed, formatting and typing errors interfere with clear organization of the report.

RESEARCH AND STUDY SKILLS SCORING GUIDE

Score of 4: Report is completed on time. State report outline, note-taking sheets, rough drafts, and goal diary are turned in. Note-taking sheets include notes from at least 5 sources and include citations. Rough drafts show evidence of editing. Daily planning is evident, based on the completed goal diary. Student needed no reminders about classroom work habits, and study time was used effectively. Student asked questions when necessary worked independently, and appeared to make his or her best effort. 

Score of 3: Report is completed on time. State report outline, note-taking sheets, rough drafts, and goal diary are turned in with no more than one item is missing. Note-taking sheets include notes from at least 5 sources and include citations. Rough drafts show evidence of editing. Daily planning is evident based on the goal diary, but some details may be incomplete. Student needed few reminders about classroom work habits, and study time was generally used well. Student asked questions when needed, worked with independence, and appeared to make his or her best effort.

Score of 2: Report may not be completed on time. State report outline, note-taking sheets, rough drafts, and goal diary are turned in, with several items missing or incomplete. Note-taking sheets include notes from a fewer than 5 sources and include partial citations. Rough drafts show some evidence of editing. Daily planning is evident, based on the goal diary, but details may be incomplete. Student needed reminders about classroom work habits, but generally used study time effectively. Student asked few questions and needed adult direction to get work done. It is hard to tell if best effort was being made every day.

Score of 1: Report may not be completed on time. State report outline, note-taking sheets, rough drafts, and goal diary are turned in, with three or more items missing or incomplete. Note-taking is limited, and fewer than 5 sources are cited. Rough drafts show some little evidence of editing. Daily planning is not evident, based on the goal diary. Student needed reminders about classroom work habits, and needed frequent encouragement to study. Student asked few questions and needed adult assistance to get work done. Best effort is not in evidence.
