Animal Research Report

Project Calendar

In April 2003 students returned from Spring Break with their homework completed: each had in mind an animal he or she would like to learn more about. The plan was to begin the project mid-week. But the children had another idea; they were so eager that they began that very day. The calendar below reflects the schedule of the project as it took place.

Week 1

Introduction to Research Report; students look through materials to find a topic. Set up Research Folders. Define terms, brainstorm research questions. Students write questions and tape in folder. Set up Research Folders. Citing resources, label books with sticky notes and enter on cards. Recording facts. Small groups meet with teacher for 20 minutes while others are at centers. Continue work from previous day.
Week 2

In lab: Introduction to Internet, how to use search engine and pre-bookmarked sites about animals. In lab: How to cite Web sites and add to folder. Classroom: How to scan sites, record information, and cite references. Lab unavailable for 2 weeks: Individuals / small groups print out two good Web sites on classroom computers. Students highlight info on printouts, take notes, and cite references. Teacher meets with small groups, others at centers. Continue work from previous day.

How to write sentences from facts on note cards. Preview flip book. Develop rubric together. How to draw animal on flipbook, review criteria for pictures. Teacher works with individuals. Overview of flip book steps each day and review rubric. Teacher works with small groups as needed. Continue work from previous day. Continue work from previous day.

In lab: Draw picture in Paint. Work on drawing a picture, saving it, and importing it. How to open Power-Point template. Work on slide show - enter text from flip books. In lab: Work on PowerPoint presentation. Work on flip books / PowerPoint in classroom.

Teacher prints slide shows so kids have hard copy to edit in class. In lab: Edit slide show from corrected printouts.
