"If the student has not mastered it, I put a line through it. Sometimes I will be looking for one skill and see another in use. This way, I have all levels of notes about students and can group them for mini-lessons on specific skills quite easily, or give specific homework." Char Soucy
Char employs a simple yet effective method of collecting data. As she looks at children's work she records the date, the skill being observed, and any notes.
Language arts is a major area of the first grade curriculum. To help families understand the development of literacy skills and give meaningful information on their child's growth Char sends home a commercially produced continuum for each area: reading, writing, and spelling. Parents can see the stages of literacy development and behaviors typical of each stage. Each quarter Char lets them know where on that continuum she sees the child's progress. The quarterly progress report includes information based on classroom work along with data from the more formal assessment measures.
